The Burgtheater, often affectionately referred to as “The Castle”, on the Universitätsring in Vienna’s 1st district, is the largest spoken theater in the German-speaking world.
The opening of the current building took place in 1888, while the original Burgtheater was located on Michaelerplatz from 1748.
Numerous important works of world literature were premiered here, including Grillparzer’s “Das goldene Vlies”, Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”, Hebbel’s “Herodes und Mariamne” and Schnitzler’s “Liebelei”.
Every year, the Burgtheater collaborates on co-productions with the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna Festival.
Many of its performances are also invited to renowned international theater festivals such as the Berlin Theatertreffen.
Guest performances have taken the Burgtheater all over the world, from New York to Japan, Israel and the former Soviet Union.
The Burgtheater’s current repertoire offers an exciting mix of classics and modern works.
In addition to plays such as Sophocles’ “Antigone” and Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors”, modern classics such as Arthur Miller’s “Witch Hunt” and Henrik Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler” can also be seen.
Other outstanding productions include Shakespeare’s “King Lear”, the comedy “Pension Schöller” by Lauf and Jacoby, Akhtar’s “Outlawed” and Bernhard’s “The Ignorant and the Madman”.
Works by Goethe, Molière, Goldoni and Reza are also regularly on the repertoire.
The Burgtheater is not only known for its performances, but also offers a platform for debates and guest performances.
The discussion series “Europa im Diskurs – Debating Europe” as well as events such as “Hader spielt Hader” or the dance ensemble “Shen Yun” also find space here.
In the “Stage Magic” event, the technical expertise of the theater is impressively presented, including the impressive revolving cylinder stage with pyrotechnics, projections and acoustic illusions.
The Burgtheater’s ensemble, including well-known names such as Dorothee Hartinger, Dörte Lyssewski, Michael Heltau and Joachim Meyerhoff, is regularly enriched by outstanding guest performers who make every performance a special experience.
